Seated Calf Raise
How to do it
Starting position
- Sit on the machine seat and securely lock the thigh pad just below your knees.
- Place the balls of your feet on the edge of the footplate and let your heels hang down.
- Lightly grip the machine handles with both hands to keep your upper body stable.
Movement
- Raise your heels as high as possible to contract your calf muscles.
- Pause briefly at the top, then slowly lower your heels.
- Repeat the movement within a range that does not strain your ankle joints.
Breathing
Exhale as you raise your heels and inhale as you lower them.
Trainer tips
- Fit the pad snugly above your knees
- Lower your heels deep to stretch
- Squeeze your soleus at the top
Cautions
- If you use momentum, it strains your Achilles tendon, so move slowly.
- If your feet slip off the platform, there is a risk of injury, so place your feet properly.
- Using a short range of motion

How GYMKC sets the weight for this exercise
For example, if you do 12 reps with 40 kg and log that you could have done about 2 more, GYMKC estimates your 1RM at about 62.6 kg.
With the calf raise machine, each step is 5 kg (10 lb), so the next weight is 45 kg. Within your 12–20 reps target, the sets you log decide whether to add reps first or add weight.
These numbers are an example of how the calculation works. Your actual prescription is recalculated every set from your own records. See how the calculation works
