Standing Side Leg Raise

Glutes Abs Isolation Bodyweight
Demo (loops)

How to do it

Starting position

  1. Stand up straight with your feet together.
  2. Lightly place one hand on a wall or chair.
  3. Brace your abs and draw your ribs down.
  4. Point the toes of the lifting leg forward.

Movement

  1. Slowly lift one leg out to the side.
  2. Lift only to the point where your outer glutes squeeze.
  3. Pause briefly at the top and feel the squeeze.
  4. Resist and lower back to the starting position without losing tension.

Breathing

Exhale as you lift your leg and inhale as you lower it.

Cautions

  • If you lean your torso to the opposite side, your leg goes up, but you do not use your glutes.
  • If your toes turn upward, the front of your thigh works instead.
  • Facing forward is more important than lifting high.
